12 race card on Saturday at Gulfstream Park! I will leave you to try and find the winners of the earlier races as I see it as a herculean task.
Race 8) ONE MILE STATE BRED ALLOWANCE OPTIONAL CLAIMER FOR FILLIES AND MARES 1 MILE ON TURF (rails at 60 feet)
#4 Yolanda’s Pride ~ TOP PICK, speed early and speed late. There is some other speed in here, which is a tad worrisome; however I trust in Rosario.
#3 Lookinlikeaqueen ~ the logical pick here is a multiple winner in top form with career best 77 Beyer in last. She comes back in just under 3 weeks, which may be cause for concern as this is not a pattern that has worked in the past.
#6 Ms Headley ~ LONGSHOT, cleverly named for west coast trainer Karen Headley, this filly by The Big Beast has proven to run well fresh. I would love to see her not hustled or rushed. Her local works are just okay, as she seems like she wants to do things at her own pace. Two turns may be the trick …….I think the ever patient Maragh will fit her like a glove.
Race 10) ONE MILE TURF ALLOWANCE OPTIONAL CLAIMER 4 YEAR OLDS AND UP (rails at zero)
#1 Colonist ~TOP PICK 6 year old returns to the race as a gelding with a layoff since Nov 2018. His trainer however; excels in this category, winning at 30%. From a numbers perspective if he can return to his G1 Shoemaker <=Mile form (albeit 2 years ago) he’s super live as the only horse to record a triple digit Beyer.
From a works perspective, he looks better than I have ever seen him (and I have seen him a lot , being an ex jerry Hollendorfer pupil). A turf horse working on the dirt, he matched strides with Dr. Post, who turned in an eye popping performance breaking his maiden on March 29 going 7 panels on the dirt.
#10 Regally Irish ~ Another one in here with the “ultimate equipment change “ (sorry boys) This newly gelded son of Regal Ransome is out of a 1/2 sister to Irish war Cry and Irish Strait, both graded stakes winners, and while his numbers don’t match some of the others in here, his local works are outstanding!! Talk about feet on the dashboard, his most recent work with maiden winner Dark Mission is a sight to behold. PRICE
#9 Penalty ran a huge race for a trainer who usually likes to “race them “ in to shape, so he’s a must use as well.
#3 First Premio ~ is very interesting as he ran huge in the G1 Shadwell Turf Mile last October and will be very well bet here; however he has never run at Gulfstream and judging from his form he appears to run extremely well on “softer” turf courses (FG and Kee)? His local works are okay, but he looks like he never really lets him self down….
#2 Kroy and #4 Dr Shane can be seen working here although Trainer Danny Gargan feels Kroy may need one!
Race 11) 7 FURLONGS ALLOWANCE OPTIONAL CLAIMING FOR 3 YEAR OLDS
#3 I’ll Fight Dempsey ~ TOP PICK very impressive breaking his maiden from the one hole, been given ample time to recover and comes in with a strong series of works.
#4 Sonneman ~ Dangerous son of Curlin is a 1/2 to stakes winner Smart Transition and will only improve with age and distance. He has been working very smartly ( pun intended) in the mornings for Hennig.
#8 Acre ~ gets a cozy spot on the outside and has fired a bullet blowout at the very deep and tiring Payson Park. Works suggest this big stout colt could be a useful play underneath.
