DEL MAR SPOTLIGHT RACES:
Third Race: Post: 4:03 PT
Top Pick: 7-Night Party (4-1)
Debuting daughter of Capital Account has displayed enough early speed in her morning preps to outrun a maiden claiming juvenile field, and while her stamina might be a tad suspect she should be able to get loose early and roll all the way to the wire. It’s been a slow year for this barn, but veteran trainer Hector Palma has a history of success with young stock and looks to have this filly plenty fit and properly spotted. She’s listed at 4-1 on the morning line and represents a reasonable gamble at the price in the win pool and in the various rolling exotics.
Fifth Race – Post: 5:03 PT
Top Pick: 9-Laurel Canyon (7/2)
Launches a comeback in this first-level allowance optional claimer for fillies and mares and because she won her debut back in the spring of 2021 we know she can fire fresh. From a barn that has superior stats with layoff runners, the daughter of Nyquist attracts leading jockey Juan Hernandez while adding Lasix for the first time following a string of strong drills at San Luis Rey Downs that should have her cranked and ready. At 7/2 on the morning, this stakes-placed sophomore filly seems reasonably priced in a race that doesn’t appear all that deep for the level. Rolling exotic players should consider including 2-Big Beauty and 11-Cause She’s a Lady on back-up or saver tickets and in exactas and trifectas as well.

DEL MAR WORKOUT ANALYSIS AND COMMENTARY:
SECOND RACE:
Real Fire (September 1, Del Mar, 5f, :59h). Grade: B+
Always under a nice hold while displaying improved speed for J. Sadler while traveling out to the seven furlong pole, splits of :11.2, :22.3, :46.2 and :59 flat, able to go even faster if turned loose. Third in both of his starts to date but seems capable of better.

THIRD RACE:
Night Party (August 29, Del Mar, 4f, :47.4hg). Grade: B
Juvenile filly flashed good speed from the gate without being asked for her best while much best over Magic Secret (4f, :48.2hg), splits of :23.3, :35 flat and :47.4 (galloped out five furlongs in 1:01.1). Has the kind of speed that will make her dangerous with moderate foes and has been given enough of a foundation to be plenty fit by now.

FIFTH RACE:
Cause She’s a Lady (August 26, Del Mar, 4f, :48.3h). Grade: B
Solo half mile drill for D. O’Neill, mostly in hand throughout while earning steady splits in solid maintenance drill. Has rising speed figures and probably has room for another forward move.

SIXTH RACE:
Shirley’s Bane (August 29, Del Mar, 5f, 1:00.1h). Grade: B
Nothing flashy but a solid, steady, main track solo drill for J. Mullins, final three furlongs in :36.1, no real pressure. Justify filly doesn’t act like a quick type but is a decent mover and likely will prefer a distance of ground. Certainly bred to handle grass. Interesting.
